under the young appellation
The Agriculture Department of the Autonomic Government
of Castilla-La Mancha grants the ‘Gran Selección
Awards’ since 1990, in order to acknowledge the
best cheeses, wines, oils, honeys and saffrons made
in this autonomous region. In the 2007 edition, ‘Misterio
de Fontana Roble 2006’, from Bodegas Fontana,
has been one of the chosen.
The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha established
these awards aiming to the promotion of the emblematic
agricultural products of the region through that ones
standing out for their excellence.
The awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, April 24th,
at the ‘Gran Teatro de Manzanares’, with
the presence of Elena Espinosa, Ministry of Agriculture.
José María Barreda, president of Castilla-La
Mancha, was in charge of presenting the award to Ana
Cantarero, general manager of Bodegas Fontana, who
showed the high value she grants to this distinction: “All
our hopes are in these new wines from Uclés
Appellation. This prize is a genuine reason for pride
for all the people involved in the creation of this
wine”, she said.
The winery from Cuenca launched last year ‘Misterio
de Fontana Roble 2006’, a new wine under a new
Appellation: Uclés. Wines from Uclés
are characterized by a well understood modernity and
for paying a great respect to the fruit, resulting
in powerful, temperamental wines but finely balanced
and very pleasant in the mouth.
‘Misterio de Fontana Roble 2006’ is made
from Tempranillo (85%) and Syrah (15%) grapes from
the Montecarbonero estate. It is a plot with ten years
old vines, with low yields and an excellent microclimate.
All this together results in a magnificent balance
between acidity and sugar at the optimal ripening stage.
Bodegas Fontana, a familiar firm devoted to quality
winemaking, stands out, since its creation in 1997,
for its innovative and researching character in viticulture
as well as in oenology. With the wines ‘Misterio
de Fontana Joven’ and ‘Misterio de Fontana
Roble’, this winery completes an outstanding
range in which acclaimed ‘Quercus’, ‘Dueto
de Fontana’, ‘Fontal’ and ‘Gran
Fontal’ were already present.
