  D.O. Uclés - History

The project to establish an independent Designation of Origin was launched in 2003 on the initiative of eight wineries in the region of Castilla - La Mancha who, based on their long experience, were aware of the area's potential for making top quality wines.

An established winemaking tradition, particular qualities in the soil, ideal climate conditions and eight wineries' experience in growing grapes on the land and treating them in the cellar, all warrant the establishment of the Uclés appellation, which offers exclusive coverage to red wines of recognised quality and an exceptional tasting profile.

Thus D.O. Uclés was born with the most promising prospects, and eager to prove its winemaking potential to the world. Officially, the Production Regulations for wines under Uclés appellation were published by virtue of an Agriculture Department Order of 22 April 2005 in the Castilla - La Mancha Official Bulletin of 9 May 2005, subsequently modified under Order of 1 February 2006, published on 28 February 2006. The Regulations contain all the provisions required by the Castilla - La Mancha Vine and Wine Law (8/2003).

A unique appellation
A drive through the region reveals that the environment, topography, climate and soil at Uclés set it aside from the typical winemaking regions of La Mancha . The region enjoys a variation in land formations, soil types and depth and specific climate conditions that do not match the typical Southern Plateau profile.

The winemaking region is located on the Southern Spanish Plateau, in the Western reaches of the province of Cuenca and North-Eastern Toledo .

It covers and expanse of 175,000 hectares , though only 1,500 of these are planted with grape varieties apt for making wines under Uclés appellation.

The region's geographical profile ranges from 500 to 800 m above sea level in the Western half, and 600 to 1200 m in the Eastern half, both divided by the Altomira Mountain range.
